Some advices on the pedigree
How many of Jack Russell Terrier owners, forewarned or not, have been so astounded by his needs that they abandoned their dog even before he became adult? It’s a classical scenario and you have to be aware of that before deciding to adopt a Russell Terrier.
Russell Terriers (Jack and Parson)
… are big dogs in small bodies.
They have the same (or even higher!) need of exercises as big dogs. Their personality goes with that. They weight 20 kilos, but they don’t hesitate to challenge some congeners three times bigger than themselves.
… need a strict but logic discipline.
They are very smart and they will test your limits all their life. They can even educate their owner (sometimes with signs of aggression) before he will notice. This nature has to be understood and correctly controlled.
… can become very possessive
with the owner or one of the family member and can have a very protective behaviour (leading to aggression) if it’s not controlled since the earliest age.
… are in good shape till 15 years old or more.
Their activity needs and their hunting desire will last all their life.
… can be destructive if they are not supervised, and especially used.
The most of the time, this behaviour appears because of boredom, lack of activity, exercise or discipline. If your reference is a “perfect” Jack, behaving correctly, active and cheerful, it’s only because this dog has the chance to have an owner who takes care of him.
… don’t look like dogs in movies or other kind of media.
These dogs are trained and controlled by professionals. They are docile during very short periods and their needs are known and respected by their trainers who adapt themselves.
To conclude, Russell Terriers need a long term engagement, activities, exercises, and education.
Their unique character, their intelligence and their energy can be sometimes frustrating, very entertaining, can bring a lot of joy (when they are correctly controlled) or a lot of problems (when they are not controlled!). If this type of relationship doesn’t match to you, contemplate to get another pedigree dog.
