Hunting

At the beginning, Russell Terriers are underground hunting dogs.

In England, they used them the day before a fox hunting. Dogs forced foxes to leave their burrows, like that they were on ground for the game hunting day.

Some riders had even their dog on their saddle in case one fox will return in his burrow. In this case they put the dog in the hole, the fox left his shed and the hunt could continue.

Still today, many hunters use Russell Terriers to dig up foxes, badgers or coypus. But nowadays we use mostly this dog to hunt big games aboveground (stag, roe deer, wild boar).

Itís a very careful dog. We ask him to harass the game till this one leaves his shed, we donít want him to go on contact and risk to be hurt.

Russell Terriers are proximity barkers for aboveground and underground hunting.

A Jack or a Parson too much biting is not a good Russell Terrier in his hunting activity and will not live long.

Hunting qualities have to participate in the breeding selection to improve the pedigree.
